2016 Schedule and Announcements

We hope you are getting excited camp.  It is a celebration of Korean culture, families, and friendship. Tomorrow the wonderful SIWA volunteers from Sookmyung University in Seoul will be coming on a train from Albany to Rochester. For the new families and participants the SIWA students teach Folktale, Language, Korea Today, History, and Dance and Music classes.  We also have Tae Kwon Do, Drumming and Games, and Cooking classes. We have a number of updates and instructions so please bear with us if this post gets a little long!

The schedule will generally be the same as in past years:

Friday, July 8th – 4 PM to 7 PM

Registration, introductions, dinner, & games

Saturday, July 9th – 10 AM to 4 PM

Camp classes

Sunday, July 10th – 1 PM to 6 PM

Camp classes, Korean food banquet at 4:30

Children/Youth Activities

One difference to note from past years is that Friday’s dinner will be catered Italian food (instead of potluck).  We do ask that if your last name starts with A-L please bring an appetizer and M-Z a dessert to share Friday night.  Campers and CITs will be getting water bottles with extras for adults if they would like to purchase one.  If you would like something else to drink besides water please bring your own beverages.

On Saturday participants should plan on bringing their own lunches in coolers.  There will be pizza available to purchase by the slice and Asian market will be selling mandu and other goodies so bring money for that if you are interested.

Also new this year on Sunday there will be a photo booth set up in the cafeteria.  The photo strips should make great souvenirs from camp.  If you would like to make a donation to offset the cost of the photo booth that would be greatly appreciated.  This year’s Sunday dinner is being catered by Butapub, so that will be a fun new twist on Korean food.

McQuaid Jesuit is located at 1800 Clinton Avenue South, Rochester 14618.  The best entrance to use is the one furthest from Elmwood Avenue and closest to the Tops plaza.  We will have signs at the entrance.

Please complete the registration form, which is available to download at the end of this post.  If you want to save time at the registration desk you can print it out and bring it with you on Friday.  If not we will have extra blank copies at the registration desk. We will have name tags at the registration desk and hand out camp shirts on Friday.

If you were born in 2004 or earlier and if you are in middle school or high school you are a camp CIT!  CITs play a vital part for camp serving as role models participating along with the campers and helping supervise them as well.  We ask that CITs arrive at 9:30AM at McQuaid on Friday, July 8th. We will have time for ice breakers and introductions.  This is a great time to get to know fellow volunteers as well as the students from Sookmyung University.  There will be a CIT training session and then you will help us get ready for camp.  Lunch will be provided for the CITs and SIWA members on Friday.

CITs and host families: We would like the SIWA members and CITs to be at McQuaid a half hour before camp begins, so 9:30AM on Saturday, and 12:30PM on Sunday.

If you are not a host family please take time to ask about hosting students in the future.  It is a wonderful experience.  Host families will identify themselves when we do introductions on Friday.

If you have any other questions please let me know.  We will also be posting updates on our Facebook page so you can check there as well.

Thank you in advance from the planning team.  We look forward to building community with you!
